Khairtabad Mosque is located in the suburban town of Khairtabad, in Hyderabad in the state of Telangana, in South India. Actually the town is built around this mosque. It is one of the oldest mosques in this region. It is also one of the most sought-after mosques after Mecca Majid in Hyderabad. It is known specially for its historical and architectural significance.

Khairatabad Mosque Religious Significance

Khairatabad Mosque Historical Significance

In 1626 AD, Khairtabad Mosque was built in a successful manner by Khairunisa Begum. She is the daughter of VI Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah (1612-1626 AD) who is popularly known as Ma Saheba. According to historians, Ma Saheba built this mosque for her affectionate tutor named Akhund Mulla Abul Malik. As per the local legends, adjacent to the mosque, there is an empty domed building that remains still vacant. The main reason for its devoid of any type of grave is that the dome was constructed for self burial by Akhund but during his pilgrimage to Haj in Mecca he passed away. It is to be highly noted that Ma Saheba requested her son-in-law named Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali to build a tank, a mosque and a palace for the princess. It is to be remembered that the tank later known as Hussain Sagar that is built in the northern boundary of this town.

Khairatabad Mosque Architecture Significance

Khairatabad Mosque was constructed and designed by Hussain Shah Wali. In the front of the Mosque, there are three-arches. The mosque is adored with slender minarets that are attractively decorated with Jali work that is really worth witnessing. There is also perfect harmony present from top to bottom of this particular mosque. On a raised platform, the chief prayer hall is situated. It is a heritage site that is declared as protected architectural monuments. Stuccowork and lime plaster work is an important part of the mosque. The Department of Archaeology and Museums has undertaken the repair work at a cost of Rs. 25 lakhs in its budget plan. This historical mosque that is still in use should be restored in safe and secured manner in order to cater the religious needs and requirements of the local Islamic communities in this region with a lot of perfection.
