Mecca Masjid Hyderabad Architectural Significance

The specification of the Mecca Masjid comes with a crowd capacity of nearly 10,000 worshipers. Its measurements in the form are width of 54 m or 220 feet, length of 67 m or 180 feet and height of 23 m or 75 feet high. The material used its making is Granite. According to the local legends, from a single piece of granite, the three beautiful arched facades were attractively carved. There are fifteen arches that perfectly support the roof of the primary hall that is actually five arches on each of the three given sides. On the fourth side, a wall rises in order to provide space for Mihrab. It is to be remembered that at the peak of the minarets is an arched gallery flanking the mosque, and above that a spire and a smallish dome. The arches and doors are filled with inscriptions from the Qur'an. The chief structure of this religious building is rightly sandwiched between two huge octagonal columns that were made out of a single piece of granite. The unique style of Qutub Shahi architecture can be witnessed through friezes over the arches, the floral motifs and the cornices with a lot of perfection.

The foundation stone was laid by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah and later completed by Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emeror after he conquered Hyderabad. It was successfully completed in 1694. Nearly 8,000 workers were involved in its construction. In Hyderabad, it is one of the oldest mosques. On the other hand, in India, it is also one of the largest mosques. The fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah commissioned that bricks to be perfectly made from the soil which is brought from the holiest site of Islam, Mecca and largely used them in the strong construction of the central arch of this structure thus coining the mosque its unique name.
