Guruvayur Temple is the famous ancient Hindu temple dedicated for Sri Krishna. This is an important temple for the Keralites to perform few family ceremonies with in temple premises. This is the only temple in Kerala which has the highest collection of funds offered by its devotees to the temple Hundiel or coin banks kept within temple premises. It is also the temple of highest visitors daily in Kerala. This temple follows a strict dress code and dosent allows carrying any modern gadgets along with the devotees and non Hindu peoples. This is a vast temple located at Guruvayur Town, Thrissur District of Kerala State in India.

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple Religious Significance

Guruvayur Temple is a well know Vishnu temple in the form of Sri Krishna. This is one of the famous temples for the Vishnaviks. This temple is considered as a powerful temple and all good ceremonies like keeping name for the new born and marriages are conducted inside the temple premises. It is believed that marriages conducted in this temple will be blessed with happy marital life and the couples never get disputed in future. Many Keralites do visit this temple before conducting or venturing in to new business or any special whishes. The pilgrimage to this temple is carried out throughout the year. Many devotees do come here to perform weighing with bananas as a custom where a devotee is seated on one of the weighing plate and the other weighing plate is placed with banana bunches. The weighed bananas are offered to the temple by the devotee who was placed to weighing. Getting blessed by the temple elephant is also considered as holy for small children's.

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple Mythology & History

The Guruvayur Temple is also called as Bhuloka Vaikunta in the ancient times, either the earthly abode place for the lord Maha Vishnu. There are many legends for this temple, but the myths associated with the Mahabharatha are considered here as most true aspects. The most acceptable story is related with Sri Krishna's parents Vasudeva and Devaki. They were Lord Vishnu worshipers. Later Sri Krishna also followed this practice. By the known foreseen future by Sri Krishna, he asked the wind god to carry the idol of Lord Vishnu to safer place when the Dwaraka will submerge in the sea water. The wind god took this idol as said by Sri Krishna and traveled towards the South India. Here he found lord Shiva with his family and decide to place the idol where he saw Lord Shiva. Since this idol was carried by wind god, wind is known a Vayu and Guru means Gods. Hence the place where wind god places the Vishnu idol came to known as Guruvayur.

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple Architectural Significance

Guruvayur Temple was believed to be there since 3000 BC. But there were record of this temple since the medieval times only. The present temple is seen with modern Hindu traditional style of Hindu temple. There is no presence of an ancient site in this temple now except the main deity of Lord Vishnu. The importance of this idol is the life size idol and has a green color presence on this ancient stone. This idol has four arms carrying possession of the disc, lotus, conch and the mace. The temple has a model of traditional house model of those found in Kerala. But it has more of wood works and is appreciated for carving activities. Near this temple a large pond is there which in named as Rudratheertham. This is where the wind god first saw Lord Shiva with his family and decides this place to build a temple for lord Vishnu. This temple has many other complexes which were recently built with lot of modern amenities it. These are the marriage halls and few porches to conduct various personal ceremonies for its devotees. All to gather the Hindu style is maintained in all new structures.

Festival at Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple

There are three main temple festival celebrated here. The birth day of Sri Krishna is grandly celebrated here on the occasion of Jhnmashtami. The Vaikunta Ekadasi is mainly visited by the Vishnavaities and takes parts in the performance of special poojas conducted by this temple. It also conducts the Guruvayur Khumbam festival, which attracts many local devotees and celebrated as a fair here. Here the annual festival Guruvayur festival is celebrated in a grand way, which attracts huge number of devotees as well as marks as an important attraction of the temple. The temple is one of the most popular temples of Kerala and thus it holds immense importance and more of all, the festival celebrated here is popular not just in Kerala, but all over India.
