Anantnag Temples, Jammu and Kashmir »


Amarnath cave is considered to be one of the most famous Hindu shrines that have been situated in Jammu and Kashmir. The temple is worshipped in the name of god Shiva. In and around the cave there are snowy mountains. The cave is also fully covered with ice but it tends to melt in summers for some time when it is opened for the pilgrims. Every year thousands of pilgrims tend to visit the temple situated on challenging mountains in order to view an ice stalagmite.

One of the most well known and oldest holy places of India is Mata Vaishno Devi which is situated at an altitude of 5300 feet. The temple is located in Trikuta hills of the Shivalik Hill range. The abode of Mata Vaishno Devi is in a cave which is 100 feet long and is narrow. It can be mentioned that there are three 'pindies' symbolizing Maa Sarswati, Maa Kali and Maa Laxmi that signifying creative, destructive as well as preservative characteristics of this supreme power.



The Peer Kho Cave temple is considered to be one of the ancient temples in the city of Jammu. The temple has huge crowd during Puranmashi, Amavasya and Ekadashi. The most important festivals that are held are Shivratri, Rakhsha Bandhan and Shravan Puranmashi. The presiding lord in the temple is the Swayambhu Shivlinga and the holy place is also known as Jamawant cave. The temple is situated at a distance of about 3.5 km from the main town.



One of the most exceptional and unique temple that has been situated in the heart of the city Katra of Jammu & Kashmir is Raghunath temple. It is considered to be the biggest temple complex of North India. Being constructed by Maharaja Gulab Singh along with his son maharaja Ranbir Singh during the year 1835-1860, the temple is said to possess many gods. However, the leading deity is Ram, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple consists of seven shikhars and every shrine has one shikhar.



One of the well known temples consisting of 12 Shiva lingums is the Ranbireshwar temple that is situated in the Shalimar road in Jammu. It was developed by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in the year 1883. Within the Northern India, the temple is considered as the largest Shiva temple. The temple has been built in the 19th century and is filled with various devotees throughout the year who gather in the temple to offer their prayers and attain blessings from Lord Shiva.

One of the most famous temples located in Reasi town is the Maha Kali temple. The temple is situated at the top of the hill near the Reasi Bus Stand in the main town. The temple is also known as Bahu or Bawey Wali Mata as it is inside the Bahu Fort. The fort is considered to be the oldest fort and was constructed by Raja Bahulochan near about 3000 years ago. The temple is basically visited during the summers because the place is quite mild and soothing during this season.



One of the most well known temples in cave that is located in District Reasi of Jammu Kashmir is Shiv Khori. Shiv Khori is situated in Ransoo village that tends to attract numerous tourists every year. In order to reach Ransoo, one can take buses or light vehicles. The main camp of the temple area is surrounded by lush green mountains. The cave is considered to be a real wonder which must be visited by the tourists at least once. It is an unending cave and its leads to Swami Amarnath Cave.


Srinagar Temples, Jammu and Kashmir »


The temple is situated in a small village named Tula Mula in Srinagar and is devoted to Goddess Kheer Bhavani. It has been build over a sacred spring and its prayer tends to be universal among the Kashmiris. The term kheer refers to a rice pudding which is offered to Maa Bhavani in the spring and thus became the name of the temple. There are numerous names of this Goddess such as maharagya Devi, Ragnya Devi, Ragnya Bhagwati and among others. The story of this temple is basically linked to Ramayan.



The Shankaracharya temple which is also well identified as the Jyesteshwar temple can be seen installed on the top of the hill of Srinagar which is near about 1100 feet high from the ground level. The hill is popularly known as Takht-e-Suleiman and is one of the most beautiful sites for the visitors. It can be mentioned that the temple is basically dedicated to God Shiva and is considered to be the oldest temples in Srinagar.
