Sree Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple is an ancient Hindu temple built for Durga Devi in South Kerala. It is locally called as the IrumKulangara Durga Devi Kshetram. Irumkulangara means two ponds and this famous temple is situated scenically in between the two ponds. This temple is a sister concern of this city major temple Sree Padhnamaba Swamy Kshetram. Whoever visits Padmanabha Kshetram will also come here. This also comes under the list of Travancore temple pilgrim visit. It has an ancient history, culture and religious importance since, the aristocratic rule in Kerala. This temple is maintained well by its temple trust and is an Eco friendly place. The trust does social welfare activities to its Villagers. It is divinely located at Manacaud Taluk, Trivandrum District of Kerala State in India.

Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple Religious Significance

Durga Bhagavathi, the word Bhagavathi literally means Devi, Maa or Goddess in Malayalam. The primary deity of this temple is Durga Devi. She is known to be the incarnation of the Adhi Para Sakthi. This temple is worshiped by all sects of Hinduism. This temple does not allow rituals and ceremonies such as Ottam, Divasam and Thottampaattu. Rest of all rituals is done here with avoiding red color flowers. This temple only uses Nandyarvattom, lotus, jasmine and tulsi petals and flowers. She is popularly called as the Bhagavathi Amma. She bless her children's who ever comes here with devotion. She is powerful and known for her miracles happening with the devotees. Its sub deities are Navagraha, Brahm Rakshas, Madan Thampuran, Nagaraja, Bhairava Moorthy and Lord Ganesh. This temple is open throughout the year and begins its daily rituals from 5:30AM to 10:00AM and 5:00PM to 8:00PM.

Sree Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple is always associated with the famous Padmanabha Kshetram which is nearby this temple. This is also said that the deity here is a sister temple built for Para Shakthi. Since the ancient times the Padmanabha Kshetram priest do conducts the rituals and ceremonies of this temple.

Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple Architectural Significance

Sree Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple has undergone many changes. The present temple is recently renovated in the year 2009 and inaugurated by the present Travancore princely clan named Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma. The main architect behind this new temple is S Narayana Moorthy and Kanippayyur Krishnan Namboodiripad. They are well known for temple dynamics and constructed this temple is typical Kerala temple architectural pattern. This temple has unique Vasthu Sashtra and in 2011, a Nakshtravanam was planted in the front of this temple which has significance to birth stars related to trees. It has got a Sarpa Kavu which reflects the full image on the nearby temple pond water. This is a traditional temple having many gabled tops covered by the terracotta tiles. One can find many beautiful porches inside this temple and few are having a pyramid shaped domes. The main entrance has got few stone arts on it. There are two standing elephants carved on the entrance pillar. Its main deity has separate cell shrine and its sub deities are kept in separate complexes nearby the main deity. The most important beauty is the temple location in between two ponds. These are the temple ponds and have free missionary works and look very beautiful along with this temple.

Festival at Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple

Sree Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi Temple celebrates Painkuni Mahothsavam annually. This festival usually falls in between March and April month and grandly participated by the women hood of Kerala. This is a 10 day festival with full of lights, sounds, cultural and procession of temple deity is carried out by its devotees. The other festival is Mandala Vratham, which is especially for the Shabri Mala pilgrims. The Vinayaka Chathurthi is celebrated here on the occasion of Lord Vinayakas birth day. The Pooja Vaypu is a similar festival like the Dussera and during this festival season, it is celebrate with immense importance and in a grand way, making the full 10 days of celebration at the temple grand and enlightening.
