Sitamarhi Temple or Sita Samahit Sthal is a sacred place which is located almost central amid Allahabad and Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh. It is a popular Hindu place and an attractive tourist spot with considerable number of devotees arrive throughout the year. Sita Samahit Sthal is mainly dedicated to goddess Sita along with lord Ram and his devotee lord Hanuman. It is believed that Sita Samahit Sthal is the actual place where mother Sita went underground.

Sita Samahit Sthal has immense religious significance where devotees visit the temple with great conviction and dedication. The local people believe that if earthen lamps of ghee or oil are ignited in the temple for about fifteen days or one month, any desires can be satisfied. In order to obtain blessing, one require to light about 100 lamps each day. Such activity has added to the beauty and religious significance of the temple.

It is stated that once Sita Samahit Sthal was visited by Swami Jitendranath and he desired that the very splendid memorial of goddess Sita be created in this location. Sita Samahit Sthal stands precisely on the bank where goddess Sita inclined to earth. This holy location is quite near to the ashram of popular saint Valmiki at the edge of Ganga River. Sitamarhi Temple Mythology & History

In accordance with Indian mythology, Sita Samahit Sthal is the place where lord Ram's wife Sita was abandoned. Furthermore, it is the place where goddess Sita gave birth to her two sons named Luv and Kush.

According to Hindu epic Ramayana, after lord Ram returned to Ayodya from the outstanding victory against mighty Ravan, the strong emperor of Lanka, a big yagya was organised by lord Ram himself. On that occasion, the horse of that imposing yagya was released from Ayodya. The horse was to travel to any route or in any empire and the king of that empire will require to announce lord Ram as the ruler. When the horse was travelling in the forest of present Bhadohi district, the two sons of mother Sita apprehended it. Afterwards, every great fighters of lord ram comprising Laxman, Satrughna and Bharat among others were conquered in a severe battle between Luv and Kush. Even the powerful Hanuman also tied by two of them. Finally, the great emperor of Ayodya, i.e. lord Ram appeared to that place in order to fight them. However, on that time, no one knew that the boys were actually the prince of Ayodya and the son of lord Ram himself. When lord Ram arrived in the battleground, every sacred spirits came to observe the infrequent scene. Mother Sita also came to lord Ram and told with folded palm that she aided both sons with great efforts and love. She also said that it was the time to end her human life form, since she is a goddess after all. Hence, she requested mother earth to take her. After that, the earth break out and mother Sita entered into it forever. Lord ram was shocked to observe such incident and attempted to stop her from entering into the earth, but he could only catch her hair. Nevertheless, mother Sita left her two sons behind who later went to Ayodya. The present Sita Samahit Sthal give tribute to the act of goddess Sita.

Sitamarhi Temple Architectural Significance

Sita Samahit Sthal is based on Hindu architectural style. In the complex of Sita Samahit Sthal, there is an emblematic symbol of god Shiv. It looks attractive with real waterfall in the deity of Shiv Linga. Inside the temple, there is a shrine made with white marble where goddess Sita was undergrounded. There is a huge pond near the shrine. The main temple of goddess Sita has two floors. In the first floor there is a marble made statue of mother Sita and in the ground floor also, there is another white colour statue of goddess Sita. The view of Sita Samahit Sthal is astonishing with attractive glass decorations.
