Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is an ancient Hindu Temple located in the heart of the Sri Rangapatinam in the Mandya District of Karnataka State in India. This temple is more than 1000 years old which is initially built by the Hoysala Empire in the 10th century AD. This was further expanded and built by the Vijaya Nagara Empire in the medieval times and final touches were made by the Islamic ruler named Hyder Ali of the Mysore kingdom. He is known to destroy many Hindu temples in the Malabar province in Kerala. But he was responsible to finish this Ranganathan temple which is very near his fort. This temple is one of the most important pilgrim places for the Vaishnaviks. This temple is the 2nd largest sculpture of sleeping Vishnu on serpent in India among the 4 similar sculptures found in the Dravidian region. The Kotarothsava festival is the celebrated here very grandly and pulls many pilgrims to this temple.

The Vishnavate followers are its main devotees and they visit here on auspicious occasions of important days in the Hindu colander year. This is also worship by all Hindus peoples too, who is not a believers in particular sect of gods and goddesses of the great Hindu Mythology followed in the Indian Sub Continent from the Vedic Era. This temple has all of its sects of Vishnavate Idols, sculptors and female ditties. There are nearly 24 idol's built here. This is a one place temple to visit all of these dos and goddesses in a temple. This is the only complete Vishnavite temple in India.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple Mythology & History

Lord Vishnu is one of the main Avatars in the Mythology of Hindu beliefs. It is a male god and known to be the preserve of this world. He is in the cosmic ocean, where the lord is rested on a huge serpent names Sesha. This Naga snake has thousand of heads. This was the oldest temple with sculptor of sleeping serpent. But this was taken by the Swamy Padmanabha Temple in Trivandrum, which has the sculptor is bigger than this temple and is built of pure gold. The other two similar sculptors are only found in Tamil Nadu. He is known to visit the planet earth in few avatars called as Maha Purush on earth. Such Avatar's were the Rama, Krishna and the Buddha. The tent Avatar is supposed to be visited in the 20the century. But no such legendry men's were seen to protect this world from disaster so far. It is a myth in the Hindu texts like the Vedas and many ancient manuscripts has mentioned about the Vishnu Avatars appearance in the earth. But this temple is not complete with visiting its other two temples. These are the Srirangam and Shivanasamudra. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple Architectural Significance

This temple was initially built by the Hoysala dynasty in the Hoysala architectural pattern. When this temple was in completion stage in the 18the century most of its upper portion were found in the Dravidian style. This temple is totally built with granite stones. Its important features are the single stone sculpture of Lord Vishnu on a serpent and its pyramid like tower. This tower has many tiny miniature works. These are the mythic story depiction on the stones. The temple vastu kala is followed here. Its main gate built looking the east direction. Its Garbha graha is placed with the main deity. Its surroundings are placed with other sects of god and goddess in an order of its importance to the main deity of this temple.
