Ambika Mata Temple is located in the village named Jagat, in the district of Udaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, in Northwestern India. It is approximately 50km Southeast direction of Udaipur. This shrine is dedicated to Goddess Ambika Devi who is a form of Goddess Durga. The entire temple is situated in a cleft of rock that has much number of inscriptions on it. It is an ancient Hindu temple that was renovated in 961 AD. At present, this shrine is well-preserved by the State Department of Archaeology and Museum, Rajasthan. It is one of the most visit ancient Hindu Temples in Rajasthan that is known for its architectural and religious significance to a great extent among its visitors, tourists, devotees and pilgrims.

Ambika Mata Temple Religious Significance

According to the local legends, this shrine is little known among the religious devotees and pilgrims of rest of India and world. This temple actually dates back to 10th century when it was very famous among Hindu temples of those days. In this shrine, goddess Ambika Devi is worshipped as Goddess Shakti who is regarded as premeval sources of energy. This Goddess is directly associated with Goddess Durga through her lion mount. On the other hand, this Goddess is directly also connected to the Jain religion through a vision advising Goddess Vimala about building his Adinath shrine situated in Mount Abu. In this shrine, most of the religious affairs, poojas, homams, yagnas, etc are conducted as per the ancient Vedic rules and regulations with a lot of perfection. Local people daily drop in for the regular religious rituals performed in this temple. This temple is also visited by domestic and foreign visitors and tourists with keen interest. They spend the whole day going round this shrine and its beautiful surrounding.

Ambika Mata Temple Architectural Significance

Ambika Mata temple is popularly known as The Khajuraho of Rajasthan. This shrine and its complex are filled with one of the finest sculptures which is still excellently preserved with a lot of perfection. The temple is in a pentagonal shape with massive rampart wall in its surrounding that makes it fully fortified. It has a pagoda-like gabled roof and 17 turrets. On the exterior walls of the temple, exquisite details appear very high with large in size sculptures of local Gods and Goddess, with singers, dancers and musicians of the heavenly court plus images of countless beautiful and attractive women. A curling vegetal motif is marked in the richness and arrangement of the carving. Most of the theme of these sculptures is a heavenly abode of the gods and a mountain palace. The architectural styles and pattern of these temples is really marvelous in several aspects. It has unique architectural features that don't belong to this region in any manner. There are neither solid evidences of North Indian Hindu temple architectural features nor any Rajasthani architectural characteristics in it. It isn't also blended with local or regional architectural features and characteristics.
