Kotheswara Swamy temple is located in the cantonment area in secunderabad, in the Hyderabad district, in the state of Telangana, in South India. It is nearly 10 km from Secundrabad Railway Station. It is a rock temple with the hillock height of 50 meter. This temple is amidst beautiful surrounding and calm atmosphere. It is one of the most sought after local temple in the Secundrabad region. This particular shrine is known for its historical and religious significance to a great extent among the adherent devotees of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secundrabad.

Koteshwar Swamy Temple Religious Significance

The primary deity of Kotheswara temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Siva Lingam. It is a very old Lingam that looks very different from the normal Shiva Lingam of South Indian temples. The main sanctum looks like a cave because it is a rock based temple. There is a sub-temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Durga matha. Most of the special poojas, homams, yagnas and rituals are performed as per ancient Vedic rules and regulation in a strict manner. During Sivarathri festival, the huge hall accommodates large number of adherent devotees for religious functions and activities. There is a big tree with a platform foundation around it. The devotees hang bells on this tree in order to get there wishes fulfilled with the blessing of the Lord.

Koteshwar Swamy Temple Mythology & History

According to the local legends, the Shiva Lingam at this temple was formed by itself centuries ago. It was spotted by the local people amidst the dense forest are a few centuries ago only. Initially, it was a small temple visited by local people. Later in this century, it gained momentum when the dense forest was cleared by the Indian defense establishment for giving training to its cadet in various discipline. The defense cadets and its civilian population gave much importance to this religious spot and converted it into a good temple.

Koteshwar Swamy Temple Architectural Significance

Kotheswara Temple has two main doors, one towards the East and the other towards the West directions. At the East side entrance is situated the small temple dedicated to Lord with Sanjeevi parvath carved on stone. There is a well-decorated Nandi just in front of the Lord Siva. It is to be highly noted that the Siva lingam is too small plus it is a very low from the ground. On the rock walls of the main sanctum, there are numerous sculpture carved with a lot of perfection. There are beautifully carved steps that lead to the top of main sanctum hall. A small sculpture of Lord Yama is carved on the platform foundation of a big tree within the temple premises. There is beautiful separate sanctum for Goddess Durga matha. There are sculptures of Hindu God and Goddess made of marble. The training cadets of cantonment area have made an attractive replica of temple like Amarnath Cave in side the temple premises. There is a short history related to this temple written on a board at the entrance of the temple premises.

Festivals at Koteshwar Swamy Temple

Sivarathri festival is celebrated at Kotheswar Temple in a grand scale. During this particular festive occasion, special prayer, bhajan, kirthana and religious rituals are conducted as per Vedic rules and regulations in a strict manner. All the adherent devotees are permitted to stay awake on the day of Shivarathri with religious functions and activities. Most of the major and minor Hindu religious festivals are marked with good attendance of adherent devotees belonging to the cantonment area and its neighborhoods with lot of dedication and commitment.
